Where Have All the UFOs Gone? 51 / 69
CHAPTER 18: Where Have All the UFOs Gone? (Part 1)

After nearly eight decades of flying-saucer stories, alien encounters and unexplained lights, the title of this book may seem to ask a strange question. Where have all the UFOs gone? The simple answer is: They have not gone anywhere. The sky is still full of unexplained observations. What has changed is the way we understand them. In the 1950s, people looked upward and saw flying saucers. Today, they may report drones, orbs, unusual aircraft or UAPs. The mystery has changed its vocabulary. It has also changed its technology. A witness in 1947 might have had nothing more than their eyes. A witness today may have a smartphone capable of recording high-definition video. Military aircraft can collect radar, infrared and other sensor information. Satellites can monitor enormous areas of the planet. Aircraft movements can be tracked. Weather data can be checked. Astronomical calculations can be performed instantly. In theory, we are better equipped than ever to solve the mystery. Yet the mystery remains. That tells us something important. The problem was never simply a lack of cameras. It was the difficulty of interpreting incomplete information. People have always seen things they could not immediately identify. The difference is that modern society can share those observations instantly. A strange light once disappeared over a field and might never have been heard about again. Today, the same event can become a worldwide story within minutes. A video can be viewed by millions. Arguments can begin immediately. Experts can analyse it. Skeptics can challenge it. Believers can defend it. And the original witness can watch the entire debate unfold. The internet has not eliminated the UFO mystery. It has accelerated it. The same acceleration applies to misinformation. A false story can become famous before anyone has time to investigate it. A photograph can be altered. A video can be edited. A rumour can become a headline. A headline can become a belief. The speed of information is therefore both a blessing and a problem. The history of UFOs provides a warning. We should never confuse popularity with evidence. A story repeated a million times is still only a story if nobody can verify it. A photograph viewed by millions is still only a photograph. A government document is still only a document unless we understand what it actually proves. A witness is still a witness. Evidence must be evaluated on its quality. This does not mean that we should dismiss witnesses. Far from it. Without witnesses, many unusual events would never be investigated. The witness provides the starting point. The investigator then asks what else can be established. Was there radar? Was there video? Were there other witnesses? What was the weather? What aircraft were nearby? What astronomical objects were visible? Could the object have been a balloon? Could it have been a drone? Could it have been a satellite? Could the apparent movement have been caused by perspective? These questions may turn a mystery into an explanation. Sometimes that is disappointing. But solving a mystery is not destroying it. It is learning something. The history of UFOs also teaches us that governments are capable of secrecy. That fact should not be ignored. During the Cold War, governments developed secret aircraft. Some of those aircraft were far ahead of what the public knew existed. People who saw them could reasonably have believed they were looking at something extraordinary. The famous U-2 and SR-71 programmes demonstrate how secret technology can produce apparently impossible observations. That does not explain every UFO report. But it demonstrates why secrecy cannot automatically be interpreted as evidence of aliens. A
