Where Have All the UFOs Gone? 46 / 69
CHAPTER 16: What Are We Actually Seeing? (Part 2)

distance of isolated objects in the sky. If an object has no obvious reference point, its size and speed can be almost impossible to estimate accurately. A small object close to the observer can appear enormous. A large object far away can appear tiny. A distant aircraft travelling directly toward the observer may appear stationary. Then, as it changes direction, it may suddenly appear to move rapidly. These simple effects have contributed to many reports of extraordinary movement. The same problem applies to acceleration. An object that appears to suddenly shoot away may simply have changed direction relative to the observer. Perspective can be deceptive. This does not mean that every report of unusual movement is easily explained. It means that extraordinary movement should be measured rather than assumed. If an object truly accelerates beyond the limits of known aircraft, there should ideally be measurable evidence. That is where physics becomes important. Claims of incredible speed or acceleration are not merely visual descriptions. They make physical predictions. If an object travels a known distance in a known period of time, its speed can be calculated. If it changes speed over a measured interval, its acceleration can be calculated. If the required acceleration would destroy any known aircraft and its occupants, then either the measurement is wrong or something genuinely extraordinary has occurred. The numbers matter. This is why many dramatic UFO claims become less dramatic when examined carefully. A witness may describe an object moving at enormous speed. But if the distance was unknown, the speed cannot actually be calculated. The description may be sincere. The measurement may simply be absent. The same principle applies to objects that appear to hover. A distant aircraft travelling almost directly toward the observer can appear stationary. A helicopter can genuinely hover. A drone can hover. A balloon can remain almost stationary relative to the ground. A planet can appear fixed in the sky. The visual appearance alone does not identify the cause. There is another important category of UFO report. Objects that appear to behave intelligently. Witnesses sometimes describe lights that seem to respond to them. A light may appear to follow a vehicle. It may seem to change direction when the witness moves. Such experiences can be extremely convincing. But apparent interaction is not necessarily actual interaction. Two objects moving independently can appear to remain together because of perspective. A distant light can appear to follow a car because both are moving relative to the observer. The brain is very good at finding relationships between movements. Sometimes those relationships are real. Sometimes they are coincidental. Again, measurement is the solution. The UFO mystery therefore contains a paradox. We have more technology than ever before. Yet we also have more opportunities to misunderstand what technology is showing us. The answer is not to reject technology. It is to understand its limitations. This is why the modern scientific approach to UAPs is so important. Instead of beginning with the assumption that an object is extraterrestrial, investigators begin with the observation. What happened? What was recorded? What can be measured? What explanations can be eliminated? What explanations remain? Only after those questions have been answered should more extraordinary possibilities be considered. This approach does not make the subject boring. Quite the opposite. It allows genuinely unusual cases to stand out. If ninety-nine sightings turn out to be aircraft, balloons, planets or sensor errors, the hundredth case may deserve much closer attention. But if investigators label every ordinary object an alien spacecraft, the genuinely unusual case becomes impossible to identify. The signal disappears inside the noise.
