THE NEW NEIGHBOUR 32 / 34
Story (Part 32)

moved here, I was looking for a place to hide, to tuck myself away until the world stopped feeling quite so loud. I never expected to find a partner who could make the silence feel like a conversation." Helen felt her heart skip a beat. She had spent so many years protecting her solitude, treating her independence like a suit of armor that kept the world at bay. Now, standing here with Robert, she realized that she didn't want to be armored anymore. She wanted to be open. "Come with me," Robert said, offering her his hand. She took it without hesitation, her fingers interlacing with his. They walked down the porch steps and across the dew-kissed grass. The garden felt different today; the air was thick with the scent of lavender and damp earth, a promise of growth that reached far beyond the flowerbeds. When they reached the trellis, Robert paused, his hand hovering over the edge of the canvas. "I know we have both had our share of ghosts," he said softly. "I know that moving forward is not about forgetting what we lost, but about making room for what we can build. I wanted to create something that wasn't just mine or yours, but ours." He pulled the tarp away. Helen gasped. Beneath the canvas stood a beautifully crafted stone bench, nestled into a semicircle of vibrant, blooming hydrangeas and fragrant jasmine. In the center of the stone, engraved with elegant, simple lettering, were their names intertwined with a design of climbing roses. It was a place for tea, for reading, for sitting in the quiet, and for sharing the small, unremarkable moments that were the true building blocks of a life. "It is a starting point," Robert whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "A place for us to sit while we decide what the next chapter looks like. No more fences, Helen. No more boundaries." Helen looked at the bench, then at Robert, her eyes blurring with happy tears. It was a grand gesture, certainly, but it was the quiet, steady devotion behind it that moved her most. She thought of the long, lonely years she had spent believing that her heart had finished its work, that she was meant to live out her days in a carefully curated, solitary rhythm. She realized now that she had been waiting for someone to help her garden, someone to help her see that the soil was still rich and capable of producing something beautiful. "It is perfect," she said, her voice barely a whisper. She squeezed his hand. "I have spent so long being afraid of the future, Robert. I was so worried about losing myself that I almost lost the chance to find you." Robert stepped closer, wrapping his free arm around her shoulders. He smelled of fresh earth and the faint, comforting scent of old paper. "We are not losing ourselves," he promised, his tone firm and reassuring. "We are just expanding our view. I think we have both earned a bit of happiness, don't you?" They sat down on the bench together, the stone still cool from the morning air. It was a simple act, sitting side by side, but it felt like a declaration. The neighborhood around them began to wake up, the distant sound of a lawnmower starting and a dog barking at a passing mail carrier, but in their little corner of the world, there was only the gentle rustle of leaves and the steady beat of their own hearts. "I was thinking," Helen said after a long moment, "that we should
