Where Have All the UFOs Gone? 25 / 69
CHAPTER 9: The Psychology of the Sky (Part 2)

the object is a planet. The experience can feel completely extraordinary. The witness is not necessarily lying. They may simply be interpreting a real object incorrectly. Memory creates another problem. Human memory is reconstructive. We do not store experiences like video recordings and then replay them perfectly later. Instead, memories can change as we recall them. Details can become clearer in our minds even when the original observation was vague. A witness may tell the same story many times. Each retelling can reinforce certain details. Other details may disappear. Over time, a simple observation can become a much more elaborate memory. This is particularly important in famous UFO cases. A witness who originally saw an unusual light may later remember a specific shape, colour or movement with increasing confidence. The confidence can be genuine. But confidence does not necessarily equal accuracy. This is one reason investigators must be careful when relying heavily on eyewitness testimony. A witness may be sincere. A witness may be confident. A witness may even be highly trained. None of those things guarantee that the interpretation is correct. Training can improve observation, but it cannot eliminate the limitations of human perception. The situation becomes even more complicated when multiple people report seeing the same thing. At first, this seems like stronger evidence. And in some circumstances it can be. But witnesses can also influence one another. Once people begin discussing an event, their memories may become aligned. One person mentions a particular detail. Another person begins to remember the same detail. Eventually, everyone may confidently recall something that was not equally clear to everyone at the beginning. This is sometimes described as social contagion. The same process can occur on a larger scale. A UFO sighting appears in the local newspaper. People who noticed strange lights earlier in the week suddenly have a possible explanation for what they saw. They may now report their own observations. The number of sightings increases. This does not necessarily mean more objects have arrived. It may simply mean that people are paying more attention. The threshold for reporting has changed. The same effect can be seen whenever a strange phenomenon receives intense media coverage. People become more alert. They notice things they would previously have ignored. The phenomenon can therefore appear to increase even when the underlying number of unusual events has not changed. Confirmation bias adds another layer. Once someone believes they have seen a UFO, they may naturally search for information supporting that conclusion. They may read accounts of similar sightings. They may watch documentaries. They may join online communities. They may become increasingly familiar with the arguments supporting extraterrestrial explanations. At the same time, explanations they dislike may receive less attention. A weather balloon becomes boring. A secret spacecraft becomes exciting. A satellite is ordinary. An alien craft is extraordinary. Human beings are naturally attracted to interesting explanations. This does not mean that every UFO enthusiast is irrational. It means that all of us have cognitive biases. The same problem can affect skeptics. Someone who believes UFOs are nonsense may dismiss an unusual observation before properly examining it. The goal of good investigation is therefore not to become a believer or a skeptic. It is to become an investigator. That means being willing to consider possibilities without deciding the answer in advance. The condition of the witness can also matter. Fatigue, stress, fear and isolation can affect perception. A person driving alone late at night may interpret a distant light differently from someone observing the same light in daylight with several reference points. A tired person may
