the Door
The next day, someone came walking through the wood.
It was the grey wolf.
He reached Porky's little straw house and knocked on the door.
Porky looked through the window.
"Who is there?"
"A traveller," said the wolf.
Porky did not open the door.
The wolf wandered away.
Then he reached Trotter's house and knocked again.
Trotter looked outside.
The wolf seemed rather hungry and rather tired.
Trotter spoke through the door.
"I cannot let you inside, but there is a stream nearby where you can get water."
The wolf thanked him and continued on his way.
Finally, he came to Snout's brick house.
Snout opened the door just a little.
The wolf explained that he was lost.
Snout pointed towards the village.
"Follow that path. It will take you there."
The wolf thanked him.
The three brothers had been sensible, but they had also been kind.
That was something they would always remember.
