Gluten Free on the Cheap 72 / 93
Story (Part 72)

often rely heavily on rice, corn, various legumes, root vegetables, and naturally gluten-free grains like millet or sorghum. This makes their respective aisles fertile ground for our budget-friendly gluten-free quest. Ready to grab your metaphorical shopping cart and explore? Let's go aisle by aisle! The Asian Aisles: A Noodle and Grain Wonderland When you step into the Asian section (which often combines Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, and Vietnamese ingredients), you're entering a world of incredible versatility and value. Key Gluten-Free Staples to Look For: Rice, Rice, and More Rice: This is probably the most obvious, but don't underestimate the savings! Jasmine Rice: A fragrant, long-grain staple in many Asian cuisines. Often available in large 5, 10, or even 20-pound bags at a fantastic price. Perfect for stir-fries, alongside curries, or as a base for grain bowls. Basmati Rice: While often associated with Indian cuisine, it’s also found here. Known for its delicate aroma and fluffy texture. Again, look for large bags. Sushi Rice / Short-Grain Rice: Stickier, perfect for sushi, rice balls, or any dish where you want the rice to cling together. "Glutinous" Rice (Sweet Rice): Don't let the name scare you! "Glutinous" refers to its sticky, glue-like texture when cooked, not to the presence of gluten. It's 100% gluten-free and wonderful for desserts like mango sticky rice or as a base for savory dishes where you want a chewier texture. Rice Noodles: Your affordable pasta alternative! Rice Vermicelli: Thin, delicate noodles perfect for spring rolls, noodle salads, or light soups. Often sold in large packs of dried nests. Wide Flat Rice Noodles: Great for stir-fries like Pad See Ew or Drunken Noodles. Brown Rice Noodles: Sometimes available, offering a whole-grain option. Pro Tip: Always check the ingredients! Most plain rice noodles are just rice flour and water, but occasionally, a brand might add a small amount of wheat. Stick to the simple ingredient lists. Starches: Tapioca Starch (or Tapioca Flour): A fantastic gluten-free thickener for sauces, gravies, and pie fillings. It also adds chewiness to baked goods. You'll often find large bags here for significantly less than in the baking aisle. Potato Starch: Another excellent thickener, similar to tapioca. Cornstarch: While widely available, the Asian aisle sometimes offers larger, more economical containers. Soy Sauce Alternatives: Tamari: The naturally gluten-free version of soy sauce. While it's become more common in regular aisles, check the Asian section for larger bottles or different brands that might be more cost-effective. Coconut Aminos: A soy-free, gluten-free alternative to soy sauce. Less common, but worth a look if you avoid soy. Oils & Vinegars: Sesame Oil: Essential for flavor in many Asian dishes. A little goes a long way, and you can often find larger, better-priced bottles here. Rice Vinegar: Milder than white vinegar, great for dressings, marinades, and pickling. Dried Mushrooms & Seaweed: Dried Shiitake Mushrooms: Rehydrate them for an intense umami flavor in soups, stir-fries, and sauces. Very economical when bought dried. Dried Seaweed (Nori, Wakame, Kombu): Great for soups, salads, or making your own sushi. Naturally gluten-free and packed with minerals. Canned Coconut Milk: Often sold at excellent prices, especially in multi-packs. Look for full-fat coconut milk for creamy curries and sauces, or lighter versions for soups and smoothies. Always check for simple ingredients (coconut extract, water). Curry Pastes: Red, green, yellow curry pastes can be found here. Crucially, read the labels! Some brands are gluten-free, while others contain wheat flour or other gluten-containing ingredients. When you find a good GF brand, stock up! Frozen Asian Vegetables: Edamame (shelled or in pods), stir-fry mixes, water chestnuts, and bamboo shoots are often
