THE NEW NEIGHBOUR 33 / 34
Story (Part 33)

probably start a list of all the things we want to do now that we are not busy defending our property lines." Robert laughed, a bright, genuine sound that echoed off the garden walls. "That is an excellent idea. I have a list of books I have been meaning to read for twenty years, and I suspect you have a few opinions on the best way to organize a library." "I have more than a few," Helen teased, leaning her head against his shoulder. "And I suspect we will have plenty of time to debate them." As they sat there, watching the sunlight shift across the garden, Helen felt a deep, profound sense of peace. The past was not gone, and the memories of their late spouses were not erased; they were simply woven into the fabric of who they were today. They were two people in their seventies who had found a second chance when they were least looking for one, and as she looked at the way Robert’s hand rested comfortably on the bench beside her, she knew that this was not the end of a story, but the beginning of a much better one. The garden, once a source of contention, was now their sanctuary. It was a space that required care and patience, much like the relationship they were cultivating. They had navigated the initial friction, the social pressures of the gala, and the heavy, lingering weight of their individual griefs. They had come through it all, not by pretending the difficulties didn't exist, but by facing them together, one small, honest step at a time. "Are you happy?" Robert asked, his voice low and searching. Helen looked at the hydrangeas, then at the house she had once thought was enough, and finally at the man who had turned her world upside down in the best possible way. She realized that for the first time in years, she wasn't thinking about the past or worrying about the future. She was entirely, perfectly present. "I am," she said, and she meant it with every fiber of her being. "I am very happy, Robert." The wind picked up, rustling the leaves of the oak tree at the edge of the property, and for a moment, the world felt vast and full of possibility. They sat in the quiet, watching the morning turn into a beautiful, bright day, ready to see where the path would lead them next. They didn't need to know every twist and turn, and they didn't need to rush toward any grand conclusion. They had the garden, they had each other, and for the first time, that was more than enough. As the sun climbed higher, casting long, warm shadows across the grass, Helen felt a surge of gratitude for the life she had led, and an even greater sense of excitement for the life she was about to live. The house next door was no longer a stranger's residence, and her own home was no longer a fortress of solitude. They were two homes, two lives, and two hearts, finally finding their rhythm in the shared, beautiful space of a new beginning. They stood up together, brushing the stray petals from their clothes, and turned toward the back door of Helen's house. There was coffee to be finished, books to be discussed, and a whole afternoon stretching out before them like an unwritten page. "Shall we?" Robert asked, gesturing toward the house. Helen smiled, taking his hand once more. "We shall," she replied. They walked back toward the porch, the stone bench standing behind
