What Can Britain Do? The Truth About Immigration, Asylum and the Small Boats 32 / 32
Story (Part 32)

campaign. We can write. We can protest peacefully. And we can keep demanding answers until somebody provides them. ## Anger can be useful I have written openly about anger in this book. I understand why people become angry when they believe their country is losing control of something important. But anger on its own achieves very little. Directed properly, anger can become determination. Determination can become campaigning. Campaigning can become political pressure. And political pressure can become change. That is the road Britain should take. ## The final message If you have reached this point and still believe Britain needs stronger immigration controls, then make that argument. Make it clearly. Make it firmly. Make it with facts. And make it peacefully. If you disagree with this book, that is your right. Argue against it. Challenge the evidence. Point out where you think it is wrong. That is exactly how a free country should work. Because the objective of this book was never to tell everybody what they must think. It was to ask people to think. To ask: **What is actually happening?** **Why is it happening?** **What can Britain legally change?** **What would those changes cost?** **Would they work?** And perhaps most importantly: **What happens if we do nothing?** ## Britain still has a choice The future is not already written. Britain can choose better policies. It can choose better information. It can choose stronger enforcement where appropriate. It can choose compassion where it is needed. It can choose to listen to its citizens. And it can choose to remain a country where disagreements are settled through democracy rather than violence. That last point matters more than anything else in this book. Because if we lose the ability to argue with words, we have lost something far more valuable than control of a border. We have lost control of ourselves. So let the arguments continue. Let Parliament debate. Let journalists investigate. Let citizens challenge politicians. Let voters decide. But let us keep the argument where it belongs: **in words, in evidence and in democracy.** That is what Britain can do. And ultimately? **the choice is ours.** # Author's Note This book contains my views. They are based on my own experiences, observations and understanding of the issues discussed. I do not expect everyone to agree with me. In fact, I expect some readers to strongly disagree with parts of this book. That is perfectly acceptable. This is not a book telling people what they must think. It is my attempt to put into plain English the questions and concerns that I believe many ordinary people have about immigration and the way Britain is dealing with it. Where I make claims about facts, figures, laws or government policy, I believe those claims should be supported by reliable evidence. Where something is uncertain, estimated or disputed, it should be made clear. I also want to make one thing absolutely clear. Criticism of immigration policy is not the same thing as hatred of immigrants, and concern about border control should not be turned into hostility towards people because of their nationality, religion or background. This book argues for changes through **law, evidence and democracy**. It does not support violence, intimidation or vigilantism. I believe Britain can have a serious conversation about immigration without losing its humanity. You may agree with me. You may disagree with me. Either way, I hope you will read the book, think about the arguments, check the facts and make up your own mind. That is what this book is intended to encourage.
