Where Have All the UFOs Gone? 27 / 69
CHAPTER 10: The Hill Abduction (Part 1)

In September 1961, Betty and Barney Hill were driving home through New Hampshire after a holiday in Canada. They were an ordinary married couple returning from an ordinary trip. What happened on that journey would become one of the most famous stories in UFO history. Late at night, while travelling along a quiet road, they noticed a bright light in the sky. At first, they assumed it was an aircraft. But the light appeared unusual. It seemed to move in ways that attracted their attention. Barney eventually stopped the car and used binoculars to look more closely. According to their later accounts, he believed he could see a large object in the sky. The couple continued driving. But the experience would soon become much stranger. They eventually arrived home, but they found themselves unable to account clearly for a period of time during the journey. They also noticed that their watches appeared to have stopped or lost time. Over the following days, both Betty and Barney became increasingly troubled by what they remembered. Neither could fully explain what had happened. Betty began experiencing vivid dreams involving strange beings and a mysterious examination. The dreams were so powerful that she wrote down details soon afterward. The couple eventually sought professional help. Their therapist, Dr. Benjamin Simon, used hypnosis in an attempt to explore their memories. During the sessions, both Betty and Barney described experiences involving strange beings and an unusual craft. Their accounts became the foundation of one of the most influential UFO stories ever told. The Hills believed they had been taken aboard a spacecraft. They described beings that appeared human-like but unfamiliar. The story spread through books, newspapers and television. In 1966, journalist John G. Fuller published "The Interrupted Journey," which brought the case to a huge audience. The Hill story was different from earlier UFO reports. Kenneth Arnold had described objects in the sky. Military personnel had reported radar returns. The Contactees had claimed communication with extraterrestrial beings. The Hills offered something new. They claimed that ordinary people could be taken aboard a spacecraft and returned to their lives without initially understanding what had happened. The concept of alien abduction entered popular culture. It would become one of the most recognizable elements of the UFO phenomenon. But the Hill case also raised serious questions about memory. Hypnosis is not a reliable method for recovering perfectly accurate memories. A person under hypnosis can become highly focused on an idea and may become more confident in memories that are not necessarily accurate. Suggestions from the therapist can also influence what is remembered. This does not mean that the Hills deliberately invented their story. There is no need to assume dishonesty to explain what happened. They may have genuinely believed that the experiences recalled under hypnosis were real memories. The more difficult question is whether those memories accurately represented events in the outside world. That question has never been definitively answered. There were ordinary explanations that could account for some aspects of the experience. The couple had been travelling at night. They were tired. They had seen an unusual light. They had experienced a period of uncertainty about the journey. Dreams and memories could then have become connected. Human beings are capable of creating extremely vivid experiences without consciously deciding to invent them. Sleep-related phenomena can feel extraordinarily real. Stress can affect memory. Dreams can influence later recollections. And hypnosis can make imagined details feel more concrete. The Hills' case therefore became a fascinating meeting point between UFO belief and psychology. To believers, it was evidence of alien abduction. To skeptics,
