Where Have All the UFOs Gone? 11 / 69
CHAPTER 4: The Golden Age of Sightings (Part 3)

UFO was no longer merely a question. It was an expectation. They believed that contact with another civilization was inevitable. Others saw the phenomenon as a dangerous distraction from real Cold War threats. Still others simply enjoyed the mystery. The flying saucer could mean different things to different people. Perhaps that was its greatest strength. It could represent hope. It could represent fear. It could represent technological progress. It could represent government secrecy. Or it could simply represent the unknown. By the end of the 1950s, the flying saucer was firmly established in American culture. It had moved beyond the original reports of pilots and ranchers and become part of everyday conversation. The sky was no longer perceived as empty. People had learned to look upward. And when they did, they sometimes saw things they could not explain. The Golden Age of Sightings did not provide humanity with a spacecraft in a military hangar. It did not produce undeniable proof of visitors from another world. What it did produce was something almost as important. It created a permanent question. What exactly was happening in the skies above us? The question would soon become much more dramatic. In the summer of 1952, unidentified objects would appear over the American capital itself. Washington, D.C., would become the centre of one of the most famous UFO episodes in history. The flying saucer was about to arrive at the heart of American power.
