Where Have All the UFOs Gone? 2 / 69
Chapter 1: The Dawn of the Saucer Era (Part 1)

On June 24, 1947, a private pilot named Kenneth Arnold took off from Chehalis, Washington, in his CallAir A-2 aircraft. He was searching for a missing Marine Corps transport plane near the rugged peaks of Mount Rainier. The weather was clear, visibility was excellent, and Arnold had every reason to expect an ordinary flight. He was not searching for anything mysterious. What he saw instead would help launch one of the most enduring mysteries of the modern age. At approximately 3:00 in the afternoon, Arnold noticed a flash of bright light in the distance. At first, he assumed it might have been sunlight reflecting from another aircraft. But as he watched, he realized that what he was seeing did not appear to be an ordinary plane. Arnold reported seeing a formation of unusual objects moving rapidly across the sky. He estimated their speed to be extraordinarily high and was particularly struck by the way they appeared to move. He later compared their motion to the way a saucer might skip across the surface of a pond. That comparison would become famous. When Arnold landed, he described what he had seen to reporters. He had no intention of creating a worldwide phenomenon. He was simply reporting an unusual observation made during a flight. The newspapers, however, were looking for a story. Arnold's description was quickly transformed into the expression that would define an entire era: flying saucers. Within days, the term was appearing in newspapers across the United States. The public immediately understood the image. A mysterious object in the sky was no longer simply an unidentified sighting. It was a flying saucer. The timing could hardly have been more significant. America had only recently emerged from the Second World War. The atomic bomb had demonstrated that human technology had reached a frightening new level. The Cold War was beginning, and people knew that governments were developing aircraft, rockets and weapons that were kept secret from the public. The sky no longer seemed entirely innocent. If humans could develop extraordinary technology, people naturally wondered what else might be possible. Arnold himself was regarded as a credible witness. He was a businessman and experienced pilot, not someone searching for publicity or claiming to have discovered aliens. His willingness to stand by what he had seen helped give the story credibility. The authorities, meanwhile, faced an awkward problem. They had no established system for dealing with reports of unidentified objects. The newly created United States Air Force was concerned primarily with national security. An unexplained object in American airspace could potentially be a foreign aircraft, a secret American project, a weather phenomenon, or simply a misidentification. There was also another possibility that few officials wanted to discuss publicly. Perhaps the objects represented technology that nobody understood. The military response was cautious. Possible explanations included experimental aircraft, missiles, balloons, reflections and atmospheric phenomena. Such explanations were entirely reasonable possibilities, but the lack of a clear answer created a problem of its own. The public wanted an explanation. When none was immediately available, speculation filled the gap. The flying saucer quickly became more than an unidentified object. It became a cultural symbol. Some people believed the objects could be Soviet technology. Others wondered whether they represented secret American aircraft. Still others looked toward the stars and considered an extraordinary possibility: perhaps the objects were not human at all. The important point is that the phenomenon did not begin with a proven extraterrestrial spacecraft. It began with an observation that could not immediately be explained. That distinction matters. Over time, thousands of reports would be added
